Extended Southbound Memorial Cruise - Anchor or Slip

Captain's Meeting in the clubhouse at 9:00 am on Saturday, May 24th

Please let Cap'n Sandbar know if you have space for stowaways - cruising@sailbcyc.org or (727) 235-9070

I will be missing the General Meeting this Friday because I will be racing with skipper Steve Honour again and the Shady Lady crew from Naples to Key West for the 2014 Bone Island Regatta.

The next cruise is our extended Memorial Weekend cruise. The idea is to go as far as Moore's Stone Crab - Bradenton the first day, stay overnight and get up early to head the rest of the way to Sarasota. You can anchor just off their dock but if you intend to eat at the restaurant (which we are) you can stay at their dock. It can hold about three to four thirty foot boats but its first come first serve.

Marina Jack's is a full service marina without a pool so its not as full service as we would like. Also they will not honor our usual $1.50 per foot agreement we have with all the other marinas we travel to. They charge $2.65 per foot (30ft minimum) but they also have a Mooring Field and charge $25 per day (much more reasonable). You have to call the Marina Office and reserve a mooring (they also have a form on their website). I'm not sure if you can just anchor any longer because of the mooring field but you will have to ask. You can always find another place to anchor but you will have to look into that. Of course you will need a dinghy to get ashore.

The third day (Memorial Day) we leave early to sail back home - make sure your flying Old Glory!

Depending on the weather that weekend we may switch plans but I won't know until we get closer to the holiday weekend.

I have put together as much details as possible for this extended three day Memorial Weekend cruise to Moore's Stone Crab and Marina Jacks in Sarasota. I'm having engine troubles so not sure if I will make the trip but still working on it. I have provided some additional information due to shoaling at Longboat Pass. Pay attention to all the attachments and look them over. If you intend to get a mooring outside Marina Jacks you have to be insured and do it ahead of time. If I go I intend to just anchor without a mooring.

The current can be swift in and out of Longboat Pass so stay in the marked channel and go around Jewfish Key to the Moore's anchorage, don't cut right past the bridge unless the tide is slack and you are familiar with this shortcut. You are responsible for your own vessel and crew so plan ahead and be safe. Sign-up sheet will be in club this morning.
